Amazon uses Generative AI to Offer Summarized Product Reviews
Amazon integrates a novel AI-driven feature in its app, condensing extensive customer reviews to provide concise insights for potential buyers.
Tapping into the transformative powers of artificial intelligence, Amazon has begun piloting an innovative feature that condenses customer reviews into succinct summaries. This comes as an attempt to aid users in swiftly discerning the pros and cons of a product without trudging through numerous reviews.
For instance, a listing for a popular kid's toy called “Magic Mixies” outlined both positive and negative feedback. Users praised aspects like its entertainment value, aesthetics, and overall performance. However, there were concerns about its worth for its price point and a few quality-related issues.
Mark Wieczorek, the tech lead at the digital marketing firm Fortress Brand, was among the first to notice this new feature.
While Amazon verified the ongoing tests of this feature, they remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the AI models behind it. Nonetheless, Lindsay Shanahan, representing Amazon, mentioned the company’s increasing commitment to integrating generative AI across its different verticals.
Amazon's history of utilizing AI for personalized ads and customer suggestions is no secret. The mounting enthusiasm surrounding generative AI tools, such as those by OpenAI, has impelled enterprises, including Amazon, to further refine their technological strategies. Earlier in the year, Amazon's chief, Andy Jassy, emphasized the potential of generative AI in revolutionizing customer interactions.
The endeavor to harness AI for summarizing reviews can offer invaluable assistance to consumers. Given Amazon’s vast product portfolio and the plethora of reviews associated with each item, this feature aims to simplify the shopping experience. Apart from this, Amazon has also introduced a one-click rating system, allowing users to give feedback without an elaborate review. Interestingly, there’s a growing trend among users to employ chatbots for drafting their Amazon reviews.
However, Amazon's journey hasn’t been without challenges. The platform has been grappling with the issue of counterfeit reviews, prompting many e-marketplaces to deploy a mix of human oversight and automated solutions to counteract such problems.
